  • Care for animals in the park through animal husbandry, care, and, if needed, handling
  • Provide animal enrichment: this means providing animal husbandry that seeks to enhance the quality of the captive wildlife’s care by identifying and providing key environmental stimuli necessary for the animal’s optimal psychological and physiological well-being

Saco River Wildlife Center (SRWC)

Internship & Volunteer Position

Student doing an internship & volunteer position at a wildlife rehabilitation center

  • Explore areas that concern wildlife and wildlife rehabilitation.
  • Learn more about various scientific fields, including wildlife biology, animal behavior, wildlife ecology, animal husbandry, and veterinary science.
  • Gain experience in the field by handling and coming in close proximity with wildlife species (i.e., raccoons, opossums, foxes, bats, squirrels, etc.).
  • Gain knowledge about the various species’ diets, habitats, and conservation needs.
  • Perform daily duties including hand-feeding baby mammals, monitoring animal conditions, habitat maintenance, administering medications (if needed), preparing food, laundry, and cleaning
  • Animals cared for include raccoons, skunks, porcupines, opossums, bats, squirrels, chipmunks, coyotes, fishers, woodchucks, etc.

Belize: Marine Topics – Coral Reef Studies

Location: Ambergris Caye, Belize

Dates: Jan 3, 2020 – Jan 11, 2020

  • Course presents an in-depth study of the biology and taxonomy of corals while examining the ecology of the coral reef system and the future of reefs, concluding with a field lab
  • Students will snorkel in the lagoons of Ambergris Caye, the Hol Chan, and Bacalar Chico Marine Reserves
  • Access to the reef ecosystem, mangroves, seagrass beds, and jungle

Costa Rica: Tropical Forest/Global Change

Location: San José & Palo Verde, Costa Rica

Dates: Mar 9, 2019 – Mar 17, 2019

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the ecology of tropical forests, and the impacts humans have on them
  • Describe the natural history of both dry and rain forests in Costa Rica
  • Identify mechanisms by which human activities effect ecological relationships in these forests
